Alta Valtellina the enchanting Valtelline Valley in Lombardy
This tour along Alta Valtellina, (the Upper Valtelline Valley), will let you discover one of the most beautiful Alpine areas in Lombardy. You will visit here mountain villages, stone churches, and national parks inhabited by wild sheep, ibex, and eagles!
In Orobie National Park, the first stop is Teglio (pic n°2), which dominates the Valtelline Valley thanks to its central position. Teglio is a summer and winter resort with a historic and artistic heritage of great importance. You can also visit Palazzo Besta, a rare example of the Valtelline Renaissance architecture, as well as the Museum of Prehistory, the Church of S. Eufemia, and the small Church of S. Peter.
Tirano is located in the upper part of the valley and has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as it is testified by the rock carvings that have been discovered in the area. Despite the many castles built here during the Middle Ages, today you can visit only the ruins of Castellaccio, built-in 400 by Ludovico il Moro. Other monuments that are worth a visit are Palazzo Sertoli Salis, with a sixteenth-century façade and an Italian garden, the Church of San Martino, and the nearby Sanctuary of Madonna di Tirano (pic n°3).
Grosio is a Medieval village, again inhabited since prehistoric times, as the archaeological finds of Parco delle Incisioni Rupestri testify. You can also visit Villa Visconti-Venosta (pic n°4), an example of a noble sixteenth-century summer residence, which now houses the Civic Museum.
Bormio (pic n°5), the old-time village that has been appreciated since Roman times for the therapeutic properties of its waters, is located not far from the border with Austria and Switzerland. As evidence of the past, you can visit the Church of St. Vitale and the fifteenth-century Church of St. Spirit.
From Bormio, you can reach the spectacular Stelvio National Park choosing from a countless number of excursions.
