Itinerary: Venice, Grand Canal, Rialto Bridge, St. Mark Square
Grand Canal, Venice, from Rialto Bridge to Piazza San Marco
VENICE: PART TWO
Venice, built on various small islands on the Venetian Lagoon and separated by channels, is a unique city and probably the most popular and visited town of the world! Also, Venice is a must-see attraction, no other cities are similar to that. It is listed among the World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Here, you will be attended by breathtaking views from almost every corner of this "city of channels", or by the remarkable, stunning buildings and palaces, most of them real masterpieces of architecture and by the many artworks you could visit and enjoy. Still looking as it did 3 centuries ago, this town gives you the feeling that time does not run here.
San Marco Square and Grand Canal are the two top places to visit in Venice. Grand Canal starts from Santa Lucia railway station and leads into Saint Mark Basin crossing the central areas of Venice. The noblest families of Venice built many important buildings and places in white marble along the canal during the centuries giving the city its charm and which, today, are one of the major attractions of Venice. In fact, the look of the city has not changed so much since Canaletto depicted its beautiful views in his paintings in the early '700s.
Now, we will continue our Venice tour on Grand Canal from the famous
Rialto Bridge (Ponte di Rialto) (pic n°1), probably the most photographed bridge in the world, towards St Mark Square.
The first part of the tour you can see here:

So, for that, you can rent a "Gondola", the worldwide famous, traditional Venetian boat and its "gondolier" and enjoy the most iconic experience a tourist in Italy should not miss, or simply take a "Vaporetto", much cheaper, but less romantic, anyway, in both cases you will be able to admire the beautiful façades of the several ancient, elegant palaces overlooking the Gran Canal.
Just sit down on your boat, and watch the wonderful views around the canal. You will see the traditional, colourful houses and ancient palaces featuring narrow and long windows lined up along the canal. On the left side, there are many elegant palaces built by the ancient families Bembo, Farsetti, Cavallo, Spinelli, Barocci, Sant'Angelo, Mocenigo and Grassi (pic n°4). On the right side, you can admire the palaces of the families Barbarigo (pic n°6), Pisani, Morosini, Salviati, Dario, the Academy, the headquarters of the foundation Guggenheim (pic n°5), and the University Ca' Foscari (pic n°3).
At the end, you will reach St. Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco) (pic n°2), probably the most famous place in the world after Piazza San Pietro in Rome. It is also said to be the most beautiful square in the word. St. Mark's Square is the heart of the city, a marble hall where every kind of ceremonies and events take place.
Overlooking the square, you will find St. Mark Cathedral (Basilica di San Marco), the bell tower and the Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale). St. Mark Cathedral with its bell tower is the symbol not only of Venice but also of Italy. St. Mark Cathedral is a mixture of styles: Byzantine, Roman and Venetian as it was built over many centuries in the past.
When you have finished your visit you can have a relaxing break in the very famous Café Florian (the oldest café of the world). Enjoy your glass of spritz, a local cocktail made of white wine, "Aperol" (orange liqueur) and soda, with a dish of the popular "Cicchetti", tasty appetizers made with bread, cheese, ham or fish.
Panoramic and scenic views during the whole tour!
