Venice, along the worldwide famous Canal Grande
VENICE, PART ONE
Grand Canal in Venice starts from Santa Lucia railway station and leads to the famous Saint Mark Square. it forms a large S-shape through the central areas of the city. Along Grand Canal, the richest Venetian families erected many beautiful marble palaces in the past centuries.
During this tour, we will navigate from Santa Lucia Railway Station to Rialto Bridge. You can take a "Vaporetto" (normal boat) or hire a "Gondola", the famous Venetian boat.
Some of the main buildings and palaces you will see during this trip:
1 - Venice, SANTA LUCIA RAILWAY STATION
2 - The Neoclassical-style CHURCH OF SAN SIMEONE PICCOLO (Pic. n°2) (San Simeone or Giuda) (right side): it is located in front of Santa Lucia Railway Station and was built between 1718 and 1738 by Giovanni Antonio Scalfarotto. The plain façade reminds of that of the Parthenon in Rome.
3 - CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA DI NAZARETH or Church of Scalzi, it was built in the 18th century. (left side)
4 - FONDACO DEI TURCHI (right side): this Venetian - Byzantine style palace was built in 1225 when a rich nobleman of Pesaro called Giacomo Palmier found refuge in Venice. In 1621, it was leased to Ottoman merchants serving as a warehouse and was named after the Ottomans as the "Fondaco dei Turchi" (the Warehouse of the Turks). Today it is home to the Natural History Museum of Venice (Museo Civico di Storia Naturale). (Pic. n°3)
5 - CA' VENDRAMIN CALERGI is a Renaissance-style palace. Through history, many prominent people lived here and it was also the place where famous composer Richard Wagner died. Today it houses the Venice Casino (Casinò di Venezia) and the Wagner Museum (Museo Wagner). (left side)
6 - PALAZZO BELLONI BATTAGIA (right side) is a Baroque-style building. It was built by Baldassare Longhena in the mid-17th century as the residence of the Belloni family. (Pic. n°4)
7 - PALAZZO TRON : this Classical-style palace was built at the end of the 16th century. (right side)
8 - CA' PESARO : it is a Baroque-style marble palace of the second half of the 17th century. The palace was built under the design of the Venetian architect Baldassarre Longhena for the Pesaro family. Today it houses the Museum of Modern Art. (Pic. n°5) (right side)
9 - CA' D'ORO (left side): it is a Venetian-Gothic palace of the 15th century. Golden House, this is its real name, refers to the gilt-covered façade that has faded away during the centuries. (Pic. n°6)
10 - PALAZZO DEI CAMERLENGHI (left side) : it is a Renaissance-style palace of the 16th century. The Palace was built as administrative offices and still performs a similar function today. It is located near Rialto Bridge. (Pic. n°1)
