Taormina, the Sicily's terrace overlooking Mount Etna
Taormina is located on the east coast of Sicily and on the slopes of Mount Tauro near Catania and Messina. This beautiful city is a natural terrace overlooking the Ionian Sea, the Isola Bella (Beautiful Isle) (pic n°2), and Mount Etna (pic n°3)(pic n°4)(pic n°6). From here you can enjoy breathtaking and dramatic panoramic views you will never forget! Even the mainland of Italy beyond the Strait of Messina is visible on a clear day or during a clear starry night. From here you can enjoy one of the best views in Sicily.
Taormina is adorned all over with colorful, beautiful, and fragrant flowers that embellish even more the city.
This town has been a tourist destination since the 19th century, today it is the symbol of posh tourism in Sicily. A kind of "Saint-Tropez" planted on the mountain. You will be bewitched by the magical charm and spectacular views of this elegant town, one of the most visited and loved tourist destinations in Sicily.
Once here, you really should not miss the Greek Theater (pic n°3)(pic n°4), built in the third century BC in the Hellenistic era and later rebuilt by the Romans who used to perform here gladiatorial shows. When visiting it, as it is located at the very top of a hill, you could have the feeling that the real purpose for building this theatre perhaps was to create a place from where people can admire the magnificent views over the sea below or on Mount Etna above (pic n°3)(pic n°4)(pic n°6). The Greek Theater still now hosts summer performances and just imagine how nice (and romantic) it is to see the sunset in an ancient theater with superb views while watching a ballet or an ancient Greek drama!

Square IX April (Piazza IX Aprile), with nice black and white paving and amazing views over the sea, is located in the center of Taormina. You will find here several elegant "haute couture" shops, but also some remarkable religious buildings such as the Gothic St. Augustine's Church or the Seventeenth Century Church St. Joseph.
Crossing the square and through Porta Di Mezzo you could reach the oldest part of the town where you will find the Clock Tower (pic n°5). In fact, Porta Di Mezzo (Middle Gate) separates the Hellenistic part of Taormina from the medieval town.
