The Italian region Liguria stretches from the French Riviera to Tuscany along the coast of the Ligurian Sea. Close behind the coastline, high mountains plunge into the sea, giving the landscape an extraordinary charm and almost everywhere spectacular views.

The most beautiful tourist resorts in Liguria are the Riviera di Ponente, between Genoa and the French border, and the Riviera di Levante, to the south of Genoa. The first one is divided into the Riviera delle Palme and the Riviera dei Fiori.

Along the Riviera di Levante there are beautiful villages and places such as the Gulf of Tigullio, the Gulf of Poets, the worldwide famous "haunt of the rich with beautiful boats" Portofino or the area of the charming villages of Cinque Terre, which has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Near the Ligurian-Tuscan border, there is the characteristic promontory of La Spezia and the spectacular peninsula of Portovenere.

Not to mention the almost infinite number of cultural highlights. The coast and the hinterland are a trove of culture that is well-worth discovering.

Food & Wine: the Ligurian cuisine keeps the double identity of this region, (halfway between sea and mountains), offering recipes that combine traditional flavors of fish, vegetables and meat. The traditional "Pesto" is a condiment for 'trofiette' (fresh pasta made with wheat flour) made with basil, olive oil, garlic and pine nuts. Many excellent fish dishes like "Cappon Magro" (Stockfish) and "Frisceu" (small fried fishes). The delicious "Focaccia Genovese" (a kind of pizza without tomato) is sold in many shops and eaten while walking.
Vermentino and Pigato are good Ligurian white wines with heady fragrance and flavor.
